The power of the Miraculous Medal

“By mid-1845, Newman no longer had any intellectual doubts about Roman Catholic doctrine; yet, while he labored over the Essay on Development, his family and friends continued to give him unsolicited suggestions and advice against his intended step to embrace Catholicism.  On August 22, 1845, Newman entered the word “medal” in his diary: it marked the day that he began to wear around the neck the Miraculous Medal, a gift from George Tickell, a recent convert from Anglicanism.”

Newman was received into the Church on 9 October 1845.
